Lice Education
How Head Lice Spread
Where transmission actually happens, and where parents often worry without cause.
Head To Head Contact
Most spreading happens when heads touch. Think sleepovers, group photos, reading together, sports huddles and car rides.
Shared Items
Less commonly, head lice can move by way of items that have been in recent contact with an affected head, such as hats, brushes or pillows.
The CDC notes that spread by contact with personal belongings is uncommon compared with direct head to head contact.
