Post Removal Prevention Planning Guide

What to do after a removal, laid out by week. Read it here, or print this page and keep it on the fridge.

Back to Lice Education

The first 48 hours

  • Wash and dry bedding, pillowcases and the clothing worn in the last two days on hot settings
  • Soak brushes and combs in hot water
  • Vacuum the couch, headrests and car seats where heads rest
  • Let the households you have been in close contact with know

Week one

  • Do a short head check every two to three days in bright light
  • Keep long hair up in a braid or bun for school and activities
  • Keep hats, helmets and brushes personal for now
  • Write down anything you find so you can describe it accurately

Weeks two through four

  • Move to a weekly head check for everyone in the household
  • Keep the hair up routine going on busy contact days
  • Reach out if anything looks uncertain rather than waiting it out

Ongoing

  • Check the whole family every couple of weeks, especially after camps, sleepovers and travel
  • Treat a school notice as a reason for a quick check, not a reason to panic
  • Keep this plan somewhere visible so it becomes routine
