Head Lice and Nits
How to tell live head lice from nits, and why the difference changes what you do next.
Two Different Things
Live head lice are moving insects on the scalp. Nits are the eggs, and they are firmly attached to individual hair strands, usually close to the scalp.
Nits do not brush off the way dandruff, hairspray residue or dry skin will. That resistance is often the clearest clue.
Why It Matters
Missing nits is the most common reason a case comes back. Removal has to account for both the live head lice and the eggs, strand by strand.
