What Head Lice Are
A plain explanation of what head lice are, what they do, and why finding them says nothing about your family or your home.
The Basics
Head lice are tiny insects that live close to the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. Adults are about the size of a sesame seed and move quickly, which is part of why they are easy to miss.
Head lice cannot jump or fly. They crawl, and they spread mostly through direct head to head contact.
What It Does Not Mean
Head lice are not a sign of poor hygiene and they are not a reflection of how clean your home is. They are common in schools, camps, sports and sleepovers, and they show up in every kind of household.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, head lice are not known to spread disease.
